Proudly Serving Alabama & Northwest Florida

We don't try to be everywhere — and that's by design. By focusing exclusively on departments across Alabama and Northwest Florida, we deliver a level of care that nationwide providers can't match. We prioritize sending the same screening team to your station each year, building trust and continuity that makes a real difference in the quality of care your firefighters receive. Our staff understands the fire service culture, your team knows our faces, and we're just a phone call away — not a 1-800 number.

20+ Departments Served
1,000+ Firefighters Screened

Comprehensive Care for
High-Risk Professionals

Our screening program is purpose-built for the unique occupational hazards firefighters face every day. We bring the exam to your station.

🔬

Cancer Screenings

Targeted screenings designed to catch early signs of occupational cancers common in firefighters, including thyroid, kidney, bladder, and skin cancers. We use advanced ultrasound imaging and labs for accurate, timely results.

🩺

Comprehensive Physicals

Thorough head-to-toe assessments focusing on cardiovascular health, pulmonary function, cancer indicators, and overall fitness for duty — aligned with NFPA 1580 standards and tailored to firefighter occupational demands.

📋

Routine Follow-Ups

We don't stop at the exam. Our team follows up at 6 months — or sooner if needed — to ensure abnormal findings are addressed, specialist referrals are coordinated, and your personnel stay on track between annual physicals. Our Nurse Navigator works directly with firefighters to make sure no one falls through the cracks.

🧠

Behavioral Health Screenings

Evidence-based assessments for stress, sleep disruption, anxiety, depression, and trauma commonly faced by first responders. Proactive mental health support to keep your team resilient on and off duty.

The Cancer Crisis in the Fire Service

Firefighting has been classified as carcinogenic to humans by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). The data is clear — early detection saves lives.

66%

Line-of-Duty Deaths

Cancer caused 66% of career firefighter line-of-duty deaths from 2002–2019, per IAFF data.

9%

Higher Diagnosis Rate

Firefighters have a 9% higher risk of being diagnosed with cancer compared to the general population (NIOSH).

14%

Higher Mortality Rate

Firefighters face a 14% increased risk of dying from cancer vs. the general U.S. population (NIOSH).

Mesothelioma Risk

Firefighters have double the risk of mesothelioma, a rare cancer linked to asbestos exposure in structures.

Testicular Cancer Risk

A meta-analysis of 32 firefighter cancer studies found a two-fold excess for testicular cancer.

Group 1

IARC Classification

Firefighting is classified at the highest carcinogenic level — the same category as asbestos and tobacco smoke.

The Return on Investment

Cost is often the first question departments ask. We get it. But investing in annual firefighter health screenings isn't just the right thing to do — it's a smart financial decision that pays for itself through reduced claims, earlier treatment, and fewer lost duty days.

💰

Reduced Workers' Comp Claims

Early detection leads to earlier, less costly treatment and fewer extended disability claims.

📉

Lower Healthcare Costs

Catching cancer at Stage 1 vs. Stage 4 can reduce treatment costs by hundreds of thousands of dollars.

🏥

Fewer Lost Duty Days

Healthier firefighters mean better coverage, reduced overtime, and lower recruitment costs.

⚖️

Presumptive Law Compliance

Documented screening history strengthens both the department's and firefighter's position under state presumptive cancer laws.

The VITALExam team

A Team Built for First Responders

VITALExam was founded by a Nurse Practitioner with deep roots in the first responder community and over 20 years of healthcare experience. Our culturally competent team includes nurse practitioners, an exercise physiologist, sonographers, nurses, and a licensed mental wellness clinician — all dedicated to understanding and serving the unique demands of firefighter health.

We prioritize continuity of care by sending the same team to your station year after year. We build real relationships with the departments and firefighters we serve — and the overwhelmingly positive feedback from our clients reflects that commitment.

🔭

VITALExam's first responder body scan was truly life-saving — they detected cancer in my body early, giving me the chance to take action before it was too late. Their thorough and professional screening process provided me with answers I didn't even know I needed, and I am forever grateful. This program means everything to me because it not only gave me a fighting chance but also reaffirmed the importance of prioritizing my health as a first responder.

Common Questions from
Department Leaders

Our comprehensive screening includes a full physical exam, cardiovascular assessment with EKG, cancer-focused ultrasound imaging (thyroid, abdominal, testicular/pelvic), a complete lab panel, pulmonary function testing, vision and hearing screening, body composition analysis, musculoskeletal assessment, and a behavioral health screening — all aligned with NFPA 1580 standards.
Yes. VITALExam is a mobile screening service — we bring all equipment and personnel directly to your station. This minimizes disruption to your operations and keeps your crews available for calls. We coordinate scheduling to work around your shift rotations.
A complete screening typically takes 45–60 minutes per firefighter. We work efficiently to move through your roster while ensuring every member receives a thorough, unhurried examination.
We currently serve fire departments across Alabama and Northwest Florida, including departments in Mobile, Tuscaloosa, Daphne, Foley, Gulf Shores, Navarre Beach, and surrounding communities. Contact us to see if your department is within our service area.
Each firefighter receives access to their results through our secure patient portal. Abnormal findings are communicated promptly with a clear plan of action, and our Nurse Navigator assists with specialist referrals as needed. Department leadership receives aggregate (de-identified) wellness reports upon request.
Our Nurse Navigator personally follows up with every firefighter who has abnormal results. We coordinate specialist referrals, ensure follow-up appointments are scheduled, and track progress until the issue is resolved. We follow up at 6 months — or sooner if clinically indicated.
Yes. Our examinations are designed in alignment with NFPA 1580 (Standard on Comprehensive Occupational Medical Program for Fire Departments), which incorporates the former NFPA 1582 medical requirements. We continually update our protocols to reflect the latest NFPA revisions and evidence-based practices.
VITALExam charges on a per-exam basis. We know cost is often the biggest concern for departments, so we're happy to walk you through exactly what's included in our exam versus other providers — and show you the return on investment through reduced workers' comp claims, lower long-term healthcare costs, and fewer lost duty days. Funding is typically approved through departmental budgeting, city council approval, or grants.
Unlike national providers that rotate different crews through your station each year, VITALExam prioritizes sending the same team to your department annually. That continuity builds trust and allows our providers to notice changes in your firefighters' health over time. Our local focus means we're a phone call away — not a 1-800 number — and our culturally competent staff understands the fire service from the inside out.
Request our executive summary through the contact form or call us at (888) 850-EXAM (3926).
